Attention: Microsoft will officially end support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025. While your Windows 10 PCs will continue to operate beyond this date, Microsoft will stop providing essential services like security patches and technical assistance that keep your system safe and running smoothly.
Why Should Business Owners Care?
- Heightened Security Threats: Without ongoing updates, your computers become increasingly exposed to cyberattacks, malware, and viruses, putting your valuable business data at significant risk. Upgrading to a newer Windows version is vital to protect your assets.
- Software Compatibility Challenges: Many applications are optimized for the latest operating systems. Post Windows 10 support, some of your essential software may malfunction or stop working entirely.
- Compliance Risks: If your business handles sensitive data or must adhere to strict regulations, running an outdated OS can lead to compliance violations, potentially resulting in fines or legal complications.
What Are Your Upgrade Options?
Microsoft recommends upgrading to the latest Windows version before support ends. However, not all Windows 10 devices meet the hardware requirements for Windows 11, and attempting an upgrade on incompatible devices will trigger errors.
If your PC isn't compatible with Windows 11, consider these options:
- Purchase a new PC that supports Windows 11
- Enroll in Extended Security Updates (ESU) for temporary protection
- Switch to a Linux-based operating system
- Ignore the deadline and risk your business security (not recommended!)
Before making any changes, always back up your important data to prevent any loss during the transition.
Extended Security Updates for Windows 10
If upgrading immediately isn't feasible, Microsoft offers Extended Security Updates (ESU) for Windows 10, but only for one year after the end-of-life date.
To access ESU, you can pay a $30 fee or redeem 1,000 Microsoft Reward points. Alternatively, you can enable Windows Backup to sync your files to OneDrive's free 5 GB storage, though additional space may require purchase.
Make sure to register for ESU before October 14 to stay protected.
